Artists A-Z

Jeremy Barrett

21 September - 16 October 2004

Jeremy Barrett's paintings and works on paper are abstractions of aspects of the Australian landscape as experienced by the artist . In the "Sea Series" paintings , the Southern Ocean , with shore below and sky above , has been translated into structured compositions formed by related bands of colour and tone , reflecting the variety of the subject in different lights . The aim has been to arrive at a formal unity through a process of adjustment , and to suggest a state of inner calm . With the "In-Site" works , a more dynamic and exploratory approach has been used , in response to the rich and varied surfaces and markings of inland Australia , where what we see are worn but eloquent remnants of a grand ancient landscape.
